"When one man, for whatever reason, has the opportunity to lead an extraordinary life, he has no right to keep it to himself"― Jacques Cousteau
My process involves many layers. I let my paintings evolve somewhat organically. The idea I have in my mind when I begin is sometimes very different to the finished piece. As I build my pieces I am sometimes surprised that it will be the final touch and the painting will be deemed "done!"
Originally from Birmingham, England, I moved to the states in 2004 - I am inspired by the natural world, adventure, spirituality and the unknown. I think it reflects in my work. I travelled a great deal throughout my 20's and all those different places and experiences make up a rich palette of ideas that I somehow try to flow onto canvas.
Not always but often, painting by-passes my mind and I feel like I’m not really “thinking” about my next brush stroke at all, it just seems to happen. I can describe it with a quote my old man always used to tell me, when talking about making music as a drummer: (I think it was the musician Ian Dury, but I could well be wrong)
"It’s a funny word “rhythm”, it has no vowels. And do you do it, or does it do you"?
It’s a very freeing time when I am able to paint. Usually painting disasters only happen when I force myself to do it. Or when I’ve been out on the town a bit too long and decide in the early hours “I got this”!
I am always looking at the aesthetics around me and am influenced all so very slightly by each and every one of my favored artists. I love the classics like Kandinsky, Klee, Rembrandt, Turner, Constable and Goya. All the way to the modern and always solid Banksy, Chris Berens, Android Jones, UpperPlayground collectives, Art Basel; Wynwood Walls in Miami blew me away inspired.
I’m recently testing out mixed media, using mostly my own images, and striving to create more affordable originals so I can share my pieces more widely. Each and every one of my works has a small piece of me, from a finite time and place in this world created. Thanks for looking. Live your life. Get it now. Its only a matter of time...
